Secret Savings: More than 1 in 4 Greeks hide a savings account from their partner

A new nationwide survey by Plum, the smart personal finance app, reveals how couples in Greece manage their money, when they talk about it, and which financial secrets they keep from each other

What role does financial transparency play in Greek relationships? A new nationwide survey by Plum, the smart personal finance app, reveals how couples in Greece manage their money, when they talk about it, and which financial secrets they keep from each other.

Hidden accounts

Over one in four (26%) Greeks admit to having a savings account their partner doesn’t know about. Of these, half say it’s only for emergencies, while the other half use it more freely. Interestingly, 10% of respondents don’t currently have a secret account—but plan to open one in the future.

Talking money?

It’s not all secrecy. A solid 61% of participants have disclosed their exact salary or income to their partner, while another fifth (20%) say their partner has a general idea. When it comes to financial conversations, 23% of couples talk about their finances every day, and 28% several times a week. Only 5% avoid the topic entirely.

When does the money talk start?

More than a fifth (21%) of couples start talking about their finances within the first month of their relationship, while a further 18% start within the first three months. On the other end of the spectrum, 1 in 10 wait more than two years before discussing financial matters.

Marily Mitropoulou, Country Marketing Manager at Plum, comments:

“Even though money is still a sensitive topic, many Greek couples are willing to have open conversations. But the fact that financial secrets persist shows there’s still room for more transparency. The earlier couples start honest discussions about money, the stronger and healthier their relationship becomes—both financially and emotionally.”
