National Documentation Center of Greece: What is the participation of women in R&D sectors in Greece

The participation of women in the field of Research & Development (R&D) in Greece is presented by a new publication of the National Documentation Centre, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

Among other things, it is stated that in 2020, female Doctorates constituted 49.3% of all PhD holders in Greece. Female PhD holders up to 35 years old made up 41.2% of all female doctorates, while 35.2% were women aged 36-44.Also, the highest participation of women is recorded in the scientific field of Social Sciences (58%), followed by the Humanities and Arts (55.6%), as well as agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine (52.4%). Additionally, the total number of R&D staff employed in Greece is 103,525 people, while 45,001 are women (43.5% based on 2019 data). Based on this percentage, Greece is ranked 7th among the EU-27 countries.

Women record high percentages (more than 50%) in actions to support doctoral candidates, postdocs and young researchers, funded at national level by the European Social Fund in the years 2016-2021.However, their participation in the actions of young researchers funded by the EU in the period 2014-2020 is lower, such as European Research Council funding (participation of women 27.6%) and Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (participation of women 37.9%).
