The Intelligent Research Infrastructure in Shipping, Supply Chain and Transport (EN. I.R.I.S.S.T. focuses on three important sectors: shipping, transport and logistics. It is coordinated by the University of the Aegean, under the scientific responsibility of the Professor Amalia Polydoropoulou, while the following 7 Higher Education Institutions participate: National Technical University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Democritus University of Thrace, University of Thessaly, University of Piraeus, University of the Peloponnese, University of West Attica and 3 Research Centres: National Centre of Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and the Centre of Planning and Economic Research.
Through the development of 6 platforms related to the management of maritime transport waste and accidents, the development of tools for the optimization of supply chains, the development of services for road safety, electromobility, the promotion of green movements and the analysis of innovative technologies such as autonomous vehicles, EN. I.R.I.S.S.T., beyond the research work it produces, it is going to be a centre of excellence with a significant footprint both in the scientific community, as well as in the economy and the business world, the wider civil society and public bodies.
The project is due to be completed in 2023. In the context of dissemination and information, communication actions, seminars, conferences and participations in similar events have been designed.Since 2020 until today, the scientific team has organized two workshops (within the framework of the online Conference ‘XIV Balkan Conference on Operational Research), an Online Summer School (by the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean lasting 3 days, with the participation of more than 70 representatives from academia and business), 2 online training seminars (by the Laboratory of Transport Planning, Traffic and Highway Engineering of the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering and the Laboratory of Transport Engineering of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) on the use of best practices for the collection of data necessary to achieve the objectives of the project.
The presence of the scientific team of the national infrastructure in conferences such as: the International Congress on Transportation Research 2021, organized by the Association of Greek Transportation Engineers and the Institute of Sustainable Mobility and Transport Networks, the 2nd International Conference “Intermodal Transports: Innovations in Planning, Management, Business Development & Decision, the 17th International Conference on Environmental Science & Technology ( by the Global Network of Environmental Science and Technology the University of the Aegean and the University of Athens and the academic support of universities abroad, the World Water Assessment Programme of UNESCO, the International Water Association and the A.K. Laskaridis Public Benefit Foundation), the 1st CIVINET Forum (initiative of the CIVINET Greece-Cyprus Network and co-organized by the Panhellenic Union of General Secretariat of Municipalities “Cleisthenes”), as well as the 1st annual Two-day conference for the Days of Innovation and Research of the University of the Aegean – Dimitris Edward Gardikis.
For 2022, a series of actions has been planned with the aim of educating and informing about the benefits of EN.I.R.I.S.S.T. while others are in the planning stage. The actions will be addressed to the academic community, businesses related to the shipping, transport and supply chain sectors, as well as public bodies and organizations.
